Step by Step: Learn How to Inject Insulin

1. Wash your hands with soap and warm water

Avoid alcohol wipes

2. Check the insulin medication name and expiration date

Check your healthcare team’s instructions to make sure you have the right medication

  • Right medication

  • Right dose

  • Right time

There are many different kinds of insulin. Each insulin stays in your body for a different length of time.

3. For a new vial, remove the tab on insulin vial

You only need to do this the first time

4. Wipe the top of the insulin vial

5. Remove the bottom cap and needle cover on the syringe

Remove caps for both the tip and plunger and keep for later

6. Pull the plunger back to your insulin dose

7. Insert the syringe into the rubber stopper of the vial

Hold the bottle steady on the table

8. Push the air into the vial

This air is equal to your dose

9. Turn the vial and syringe upside down to 180 degrees

10. Pull the plunger down to your insulin dose

11. Remove the syringe from the vial

12. Remove air bubbles

Do this by tapping the syringe with your finger or against the table or applying slight pressure to the plunger

13. Choose injection site

Good injection sites are your abdomen, your thigh, or the back of your arm

14. Pinch the chosen site and clean it with an alcohol pad

Wait 10 seconds until the alcohol is dry

15. Inject the insulin

Make sure to insert at a 90 degree angle

16. Press the plunger and count to 10 seconds

17. Remove the syringe

18. Replace syringe caps

19. Place the syringe in the sharps container
