How do I treat high blood glucose (sugar)?

High blood glucose, or high blood sugar, is called hyperglycemia. It is when your blood glucose is above 180 mg/dL.

If you think you are having a medical emergency, call 911.

Step 1:

If your blood glucose is between 180-250 mg/dL:

  • Drink 1-2 glasses of water.

  • Get active for 15-20 minutes.

If your blood glucose is over 250 mg/dL:

  • Contact your healthcare team to ask how you should lower your blood glucose safely

Step 2: Take your diabetes medicine at the right time in the right amount.

Step 3: Check your blood glucose at least twice a day for the next 2 days. Contact your healthcare team if your numbers stay high
