How will I feel when my blood glucose (sugar) is low?

Low blood glucose, or low blood sugar, is called hypoglycemia. It is when your blood glucose is below 70 mg/dL.

Signs of low blood glucose are: 

  • feeling dizzy, weak, tired, or like you might faint

  • feeling anxious or irritable 

  • shaking, sweating, or having a fast heartbeat

  • having a headache or vision changes

  • hunger

If you have any of the above, check your blood glucose and treat low numbers right away.

Low blood glucose is most common when you are sleeping. The following could be signs that your blood glucose is getting low while you are sleeping:

  • waking up with a headache

  • sweating during the night

  • having nightmares
